In Asia, Western-style white bread is generally uncommon. But there is one exception: Vietnam. There, baguettes are eaten relatively often—a legacy of French colonization. You can easily make sourdough baguettes yourself.
Here's how:
-
1
Marinade
Combine sesame oil, vegetable oil, food coloring, five-spice powder, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, garlic, Thai chili, and sugar in a food processor.
-
2
Sandwich
Place the meat in the marinade. Let it sit for at least 3 hours. Sear the meat quickly in a little oil. Bring the marinade to a boil. Add lime and pineapple. Mix the lettuce and fresh cilantro. Fill the buns with the lettuce and meat, and finish by drizzling the reduced marinade over them. Serve!
