Melon bread, or “surprise bread,” is sure to be a hit with both adults and children. Only your imagination sets the limits for what your bread will look like. Color the dough and create incredible works of art inside the bread—you won’t see the result until you cut into it. It tastes just like regular white toast.
Here's how:
-
1
Melt the butter, add the milk, and heat to about 25 °C. Stir in the yeast and dissolve it.
-
2
Add the remaining ingredients, except for the raisins and the caramel food coloring, and stir until you have a loose batter; mix thoroughly with a spatula, for example.
-
3
Divide the dough into 2 parts. Color one part the desired shade of pink using the caramel food coloring, and add raisins.
-
4
Take the second piece of dough and divide it into 2 more pieces. Color one piece the desired shade of green using food coloring, and leave the other piece its natural color.
-
5
Knead one batch of dough at a time on a floured surface, incorporating as much flour as needed to achieve a smooth dough that isn't sticky; start with about 1 dl.
-
6
Let the dough rest under plastic wrap or a kitchen towel for 20–30 minutes.
-
7
Start by shaping the pink dough into an oblong loaf.
-
8
Then roll out the white dough so that it covers the entire pink dough, and brush it with water so that the dough sticks together properly.
-
9
Now roll out the green dough and cover the loaf with it.
-
10
Place in a greased rectangular pan. Or place the bread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
-
11
Let it rise for about 1 hour.
-
12
Preheat the oven to 270 °C; reduce the temperature to 220 °C when you place the bread in the oven. Bake for about 23–25 minutes.
-
13
Feel free to pour a little water onto a hot baking sheet placed on the bottom rack of the oven to get a nice, golden crust—0.5 dl of water is enough. The baking sheet can stay in the oven when you turn it on.
-
14
When the bread is done, remove it from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack.
