Surprise your loved ones in bed with a declaration of love in the form of scones on Valentine’s Day—or any day you want to show them a little extra appreciation. Bake them with delicious spices and grated carrots, which will give you a bread that’s both moister and a little more exciting than regular scones. If you want to sleep in a little longer, you can prepare the batter the night before and bake them in the morning.

    Here's how:

    • 1

Heat the milk to 25 °C, then stir the yeast into the milk. Mix all the ingredients together.

    • 2

Mix all the ingredients together in a stand mixer for about 5 minutes; double that time if you're kneading by hand.

    • 3

Let the dough rest for 45 minutes.

    • 4

Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 2 cm, cut out circles, or shape them into round buns and press them down lightly.

    • 5

Let it rise for about 30 minutes, then brush with egg. Sprinkle with rolled oats.

    • 6

Bake at 225 °C for about 13–15 minutes.

    • Tip! Prepare the buns the day before, up to step 4. In the morning, take the buns out of the fridge, let them rise, and bake them.
